As we celebrate International Women's Day 2024, it's important to reflect on the progress made in creating inclusive workplaces, especially in traditionally male-dominated industries like construction.

At Office Principles, we are proud to be at the forefront of this change, continuously striving to create an environment where women can thrive and succeed at all levels of our organisation.

Over the past year, we have continued to implement initiatives and foster open conversations around topics that disproportionately affect women in the workplace, such as mental health and work-life balance. Our commitment to supporting our team has only grown stronger, and we remain dedicated to providing the flexibility and resources needed for everyone to reach their full potential.

We asked some of the remarkable women in leadership roles at Office Principles to share their thoughts on the importance of gender diversity in the industry, as well as their advice for women considering a career in this field.

Tina Batham - Managing Director

"I came into the construction industry in 2000, having previously worked in interior design and running my own brand and print company. I love that we get to collaborate with diverse people to create unique workplaces that positively impact people's lives. Having females in the industry brings balance and different views. Men can support women by providing environments where they can thrive, be heard, and be treated equally. My advice is to go for it, but remember to be yourself and embrace who you are and what you can bring to the table."

Jo Jenkinson - Design Director

"I have always worked in the construction industry, which combines my passion for art, architecture, interiors, and psychology. It's important for more women to enter the industry to create a more inclusive sector and bring exceptional skills that are currently missing. Zaha Hadid has been an inspiration to me in my career. My advice to women starting a career in construction is to shape your own path and not be boxed in by others' perceptions of what is normal."

Iyna Butt - People & Culture Director

"Office Principles was my first introduction to the construction industry, which appealed to me because of its potential to change lives and its fast-paced, evolving nature. I believe that bringing more women into this industry will create space for new perspectives and experiences, leading to better decision-making, creativity, and profitability. Men can be allies by speaking out against discrimination and making room for women in leadership positions. My advice to women starting a career in construction is to be confident and use your skills and knowledge to stand out."

Leah Owen - Business Development Director

"I didn't initially plan to work in the construction industry but fell into it after realising I was good at sales and could adapt to the sector. I enjoy being a woman who makes a difference in this huge industry with varied roles. Women shouldn't feel they can't succeed in this traditionally male-dominated field. The Office Principles family has always inspired me to be my best. My advice to women considering a career in construction is to go for it, as there is so much to learn and many avenues to explore."

As we mark International Women's Day 2024, Office Principles celebrates the achievements and progress made in creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace within the construction industry. The company remains committed to implementing initiatives, fostering open conversations, and providing the necessary support for women to thrive and succeed at all levels of the organisation.

The personal experiences and insights shared by Iyna Butt, Tina Batham, Leah Owen, and Jo Jenkinson highlight the importance of gender diversity in the industry and the positive impact women can make. Their advice serves as an inspiration for other women considering a career in construction, encouraging them to be confident, embrace their unique skills, and shape their own paths.

As we move forward, Office Principles will continue to lead by example, working towards a future where women are equally represented and empowered in the construction industry. By creating an environment that values diversity, inclusivity, and equal opportunities, the company aims to drive positive change and inspire others to follow suit. Together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
