Our first project at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) in Coventry gave us a unique insight into the facility. So when we were appointed for two additional projects a few years later, we already had a good understanding of what would be required.

It paved the way for our delivery of more than 11,000 sq ft of purpose-built office and laboratory accommodation, all completed in a live environment and to the most stringent standards of sound proofing and air quality.

UKBIC is the national battery manufacturing scale-up facility and is used by organisations with new or existing battery technologies.

It is a key part of the Faraday Battery Challenge, a UK Government programme to fast track the development of cost-effective, high performance, durable, safe, low weight and recyclable batteries.

We were selected to design and deliver two new projects at UKBIC following a competitive tendering process.

The first was a new, two-storey building in the warehouse process hall, housing 8,000 sq ft of open plan office space, meeting and conference rooms, and breakout facilities.

It would need to replicate the finish of the very offices we had worked on for UKBIC some years before, ensuring staff within the main factory area and beyond, were treated equally.

Impressed by our delivery of state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for medical tech firm, Quanta Dialysis Technologies, UKBIC also instructed us to create a new single storey structure. The new building would need to offer a range of lab spaces for exploratory work, such as processing, forensics and CT scanning.

Both projects would need to be delivered in a live environment, with sound proofing and dust monitoring equipment used to ensure optimum air quality at all times.

The new specialist office facilities and laboratory housing have both been built to a very high standard and we are delighted with the work OP has undertaken.

Colin Mitchell, Director at UKBIC

The vast open space of UKBIC’s process hall is now home to two facilities for the growing battery sector, that not only further our reputation for first class fit outs, but showcase our construction expertise too.

How those two structures came together is a testament to the skill and collaboration of an incredible project team.

  • Designers and engineers found solutions to some considerable logistical challenges
  • Office spaces were constructed quickly and in a live environment
  • Sound proofing and dust monitoring equipment ensured optimum air quality at all times

The confinement of activity was crucial given the foundations of the new double-storey building were dug out of the existing concrete floor.

The new steel structure was built with purpose made composite walls, new flooring, ceilings and windows around the perimeter, to maximise natural daylight. Office spaces have been equipped with access and temperature controls, CCTV and acoustic properties, and are connected to the main building via a newly constructed bridge link.

On the other side of the hall, lies a new single-storey building containing seven new labs. Constructed from steelwork, cold panels and a concrete roof deck, it is home to a complex array of pipework reminiscent of Spaghetti Junction, through which everything from nitrogen to argon gas passes through.

We are very pleased to have handed over these fantastic new facilities at UKBIC. The construction of both new buildings presented unique logistical challenges, which were met head on by a superb project team of designers and engineers. It enabled us to deliver these two projects quickly and safely, while maintaining strict standards of cleanliness throughout.
