Creating a workplace where people genuinely want to be starts with understanding what matters most to them. For this access solutions company in Reading, that meant prioritising natural light, connection, and spaces that bring teams together.

The project went far beyond traditional office interior design and fit out, beginning with strategic real estate analysis and negotiation support to help secure the perfect building - a comprehensive approach to workplace transformation from day one.

The result is a light-filled, 5,500 sq ft office that connects teams, maximises natural daylight, and provides a variety of spaces designed around how people actually work.

With a growing team of 40-50 staff, the company recognised the need to relocate from their existing premises to better support employee wellbeing and encourage stronger collaboration.

A partnership from day one

The starting point

The company's previous workspace presented significant challenges that were impacting both employee satisfaction and team connectivity.

The existing workplace was characterised by high-density workstations with minimal natural light, creating an environment that felt confined and restrictive. The space was highly cellular with poor colour choices that did little to support wellbeing. Breakout areas were tucked away at the back of the workplace, discouraging their use, and there was minimal interaction between teams.

A new, more front-facing building offered the opportunity to transform the team's working experience. However, securing this space required strategic thinking beyond simply signing a lease.

More than design: Our role from day one

Early involvement helped the client navigate the complexities of their relocation. A detailed analysis of their current building's exact square footage, service charges, parking provisions and fit out budget was compared with the new building and other available options in the local market. This gave them a complete picture to present to their agents and negotiate effectively with the landlord.

It's an approach that reflects our methodology: working alongside clients not just to design and build, but to support informed decision-making about their real estate from the very beginning.

With the building secured, the design brief focused on creating a bright, light-filled environment that would maximise the prime areas of the space and ensure staff had access to natural elements and daylight. The client's priorities were clear: better facilities, improved amenities, and natural light.

Bringing light, life and connection to the workplace

The new workplace successfully balances openness and connection with the privacy that teams still need to perform focused work.

Natural light as foundation

Natural light is the defining characteristic of the workplace, flooding through windows throughout the space. This primary design focus forms the foundation of everything else in the environment.

At the heart of the design is the principle of connecting the team and encouraging people to be in the workplace. This has been achieved through a variety of thoughtfully designed collaboration spaces that give employees genuine choice in how and where they work.

This project exemplifies the value of early involvement and strategic thinking. By supporting the client through the entire journey - from real estate analysis and building selection through to final fit-out - we were able to deliver a workplace that truly addresses their priorities. Natural light was the catalyst for change, but the real success lies in creating a variety of spaces that give people genuine choice in how they work. It's a workspace that connects teams whilst respecting the need for privacy and focused work.

Spaces for connection and privacy

A library-style collaboration desk serves as a focal point, bringing people together for informal meetings and team working. On the opposite side of the space, near the entrance, a four-person meeting pod provides additional options for teams to come together in a more private setting, while also offering a welcoming space for guests.

Adjacent to the open-plan workspace, a breakout area encourages socialising and team connection. The space features a long dining table for larger gatherings, complemented by bench seating to accommodate more people, and a fitted kitchen that supports both everyday use and team events. This prominent positioning sends a clear message about the value placed on collaboration and wellbeing.

Throughout the workplace, warm finishes including wood panelling add texture and warmth to the space. Biophilic elements feature prominently, bringing natural touches into the working environment and reinforcing the connection to nature that the windows provide. Wall art adds personality and character, helping to create a space that feels distinctly theirs.

The layout presented a key challenge: the client wanted their team to feel more connected whilst maintaining appropriate levels of privacy for focused work. Balancing these competing needs required careful spatial planning and a nuanced approach to creating both open-plan and more enclosed areas that work in harmony.

Sustainability through reuse

Sustainability played an important role in the project. A significant amount of the client's existing furniture was reused, with compromises made where necessary to prioritise new wellbeing features and collaboration spaces. This approach not only supported environmental goals but also allowed the budget to stretch further, investing in the areas that would have the greatest impact on employee experience.

This is the second project delivered in the Imperium Building in Reading, demonstrating ongoing partnership and impact in transforming workplaces in this location. It's a testament to both the quality of the building itself and the ability to realise its potential for different clients.

The completed workspace succeeds in its primary goal: creating an environment where people want to be. It's bright, it's connected, and most importantly, it supports the wellbeing of everyone who works there.

OP came highly recommended — and it’s clear why. From day one, they’ve been an invaluable partner, guiding us through contract negotiations and creating a workspace that prioritises wellbeing. This move to a bright, naturally lit office is a major investment in our people and a chance to rethink how we work together. It’s more than a new location — it’s about fostering collaboration, boosting morale, and building an environment where everyone thrives. Thoughtful design, natural light, and collaborative spaces make this a place our team truly wants to be. We’re excited about the positive impact this transformation is already having on our daily work lives.
