At its heart, Galago Group’s new Surrey headquarters is a people-driven office refurbishment, with purpose-built spaces that enable teams to connect in the present.

But it's also a project that focuses on the future.

While a flexible layout allows for growth, this SKA Gold accredited fit out has delivered energy efficiency and environmental good practice in a multi-tenanted building, which caters for prospective new occupiers too.

Galago Group comprises a collection of expert recruitment companies, specialising in a variety of sectors including healthcare, private nursing, life sciences, engineering and construction.

The firm acquired Galago House to support its continued expansion, and relocated offices to Brighton Road, Coulsdown from nearby Purley, in the London Borough of Croydon.

Galago House - formerly known as Sentinel House - is a self-contained office building of 36,700 sq ft fronting the main road.

Rather than lease the building, Galago Group purchased it as a long-term home for its multiple, fast-growing recruitment brands.

Office Principles helped the Group to see the potential of the building - how it could be branded, space planned and sublet - and what level of financial investment would be required to realise it.

In turn, through workshops and scenario planning, we also gained an in-depth understanding of what Galago’s employees truly wanted and needed.

Key themes emerged:

  • The building needed to encourage greater connection between the Group’s sub brands
  • It had to be inviting, with an eye-catching street frontage
  • Sublet spaces should appeal to prospective occupiers, who may traditionally have chosen offices in Reigate, Cranleigh or Redhill
  • And it must support personal health and wellbeing through a sustainable approach to design

Having successfully completed an extensive pre-refurbishment consultancy project, we won a competitive tender to design and deliver the works in full.

The completed project is the result of strong relationships and effective collaboration - and it shows.

A formerly cellularised building has been utterly transformed into a space that is visually and acoustically connected.

The removal of internal walling enabled our client to gain a better understanding of what was possible and paved the way for the delivery of a hospitality-led space that works on multiple levels.

It has opened up a spacious central lounge and reception, with room for occupants to work and socialise, and a touchdown area to attract new tenants.

A first floor balcony - visible from reception - delivers the energy and buzz of breakout space in the centre of the building, promoting inclusion and togetherness.

This sense of unity continues into sublet spaces. While some 65% of the building’s generous floor plates are occupied by Galago Group, the overarching brand of Galago House is one that tenants can feel part of too.

Floor finishes cleverly guide users around a building that considers the health and wellbeing of occupants at every turn, from using sustainable materials to maximising natural light. An extensive use of biophilia and planting reinforces this approach, and is most apparent in a prominent moss feature wall at reception which is visible from the building’s exterior.

The outstanding environmental credentials of the project have resulted in both SKA Gold accreditation and an improvement in the building’s energy performance to EPC B.

In addition, we:

  • Adopted the principles of BREEAM
  • Installed LED lighting throughout
  • Reused and repurposed existing furniture
  • Refurbished, rather than replaced, one of the existing lifts
  • Upgraded an existing shower facility
  • Incorporated artwork from Galago’s previous HQ, adding personality to the space
  • Reused existing M&E arrangements, only supplementing with new, energy efficient systems where required
  • Delivered significant building control works to ensure compliance with the latest safety regulations

Externally, new entrance doors and building signage create a striking new frontage design which energises the highstreet, and will go some way to supporting recruitment and retention of talent, too.

It’s been a real pleasure to work in partnership with Galago Group. We’ve supported its team throughout the journey of acquiring a new building and moulding it to fit the diverse needs of a modern workplace. The refurbishment has undoubtedly delivered on the Group’s vision of a vibrant, welcoming and inclusive environment, with outstanding sustainability credentials. With sub-tenant areas that are presented extremely well, I’m sure there will be considerable interest from other occupiers keen to relocate to Galago House.
