We've transformed Mainline Instruments' Birmingham site into a high-specification, brand-led workspace that celebrates their expertise in ophthalmic imaging technology whilst creating an exceptional environment for both their team and international clients.

Our comprehensive fit out and refurbishment of their 7,500 sq ft space has delivered a dynamic environment that weaves their signature product, advanced ophthalmic imaging equipment, into every layer of the design. The result is a sophisticated workspace that seamlessly connects brand identity with interior experience.

The brief

Mainline Instruments had outgrown their existing premises, but relocation wasn't the answer. The site worked for them operationally, and the decision to expand on-site by conjoining a new extension to the existing building was the right one. What the business needed was a transformation that would honour that decision: a space that could showcase their cutting-edge equipment to international clients, provide the kind of professional environment their long-standing team deserved, and do justice to a brand that stands for innovation and precision.

The brief was clear: create a showroom that set them apart, deliver a client experience fit for international audiences and, just as importantly, meaningfully improve the day-to-day working environment for the people who make the business what it is.

Reimagining the ground floor

The ground floor is where the project's ambition is most fully realised, and we approached it with that responsibility in mind. The brief required this single footprint to work exceptionally hard, functioning simultaneously as a reception, client lounge, conference area, bespoke show suite, and tea point, all whilst feeling cohesive, considered, and unmistakably premium.

A new glazed frontage transforms the building's street presence entirely, giving Mainline Instruments large-scale statement signage for the first time: a bold and confident declaration of the business within. Inside, visitors are welcomed by a bespoke reception desk designed to double as a tea point, a clever piece of multifunctional joinery that keeps the space open and elegant without compromising practicality.

The conference area converts seamlessly into a showcase and show suite space, purpose-built around the specific requirements of Mainline Instruments' AV and equipment. Every piece of joinery was designed from scratch for this purpose.

A workplace the team deserves

The transformation of the team's working environment was as important to us as the client-facing spaces, and equally meaningful to the business itself.

The open-plan office is bright, airy, and finished to a standard that speaks clearly to the value Mainline Instruments places on its people. A generous breakout space, rich with colour, and varied seating, creates a social heart for the team: a space to pause, connect, and recharge. Private offices for senior members of the business provide the focused, professional environment that leadership requires, completed with luxury rugs and considered detailing throughout.

The existing kitchen, already well-specified with granite worktops, was retained and opened up rather than replaced, becoming part of the wider breakout space and refreshed with new tiling. It's a detail that reflects our broader approach: reuse and enhance where quality already exists and invest where transformation is needed. A new staircase and lift, both entirely new to the building, connect the downstair area space and open plan space.

The result: a complete transformation

From the statement reception, through the bespoke show suite tailored entirely around world-class imaging equipment, past the warm and considered breakout space, to the private offices finished with the care and quality this team has always deserved, every element of this project has been designed with intention and delivered with pride.

Mainline Instruments now has a workspace that reflects exactly who they are: precise, innovative, and genuinely exceptional. For a business that has long operated at the frontier of ophthalmic technology, it's a space that finally matches that frontier.

What made this project special was the chance to bring a genuinely considered level of design into a setting where you wouldn't ordinarily expect it. Every detail, from the bespoke joinery to the multifunctional ground floor, was drawn around how Mainline Instruments actually work and what they wanted their clients to feel walking in. None of that lands without real partnership: the trust the team placed in us, the openness with which decisions were made, and the shared commitment to getting it right are what allowed the design to be as ambitious as it is. The result is a space that tells their story with precision and that's a credit to both sides.

Julie Hattersley, Design Director

We wanted a space that reflected who we really are as a business: the quality of our technology, the care we put into client relationships, and the value we place on our team. What OP have delivered does all of that and more. The feedback from clients and staff alike has been incredible, and we couldn't be more delighted with the result.
