We've transformed Recordati's workspace at Breakspear Park into a vibrant, contemporary office that perfectly balances their rich 100-year heritage with their vision for the future.

Our comprehensive office refurbishment of their 6,500 sq ft space has created a dynamic environment that celebrates their centennial milestone whilst unifying the workplace culture. The result is a sophisticated workspace that seamlessly blends historic brand values with modern ways of working, delivering a dramatic entrance experience and thoughtfully zoned spaces that support collaboration, focus, and wellbeing.

Recordati has been at the forefront of life-enhancing and life-changing medicines for 100 years. With its beginnings in a family run pharmacy in Correggio, Italy in the 1920s, Recordati is now a global pharmaceutical company with a presence in almost 150 countries.

Overview

Recordati needed to rebrand their Hemel Hempstead office, unifying brand identities that had evolved over time whilst transitioning from traditional assigned desks to flexible working.

The brief was clear: create a unified workspace that would bring teams together under one cultural identity, modernise their ways of working, and mark their centennial milestone with an office design that honoured their heritage. Working within the same building complex allowed us to salvage and reuse existing office furniture whilst requiring careful phasing throughout the transformation.

Reimagining the arrival

The key to unlocking this project's potential was reimagining how people would enter and experience the space. Rather than maintaining the existing entrance which forced visitors down a narrow, corridor-like approach, we proposed relocating the entrance entirely.

Visitors now arrive through the building's glass atrium lifts, ascending with anticipation before the doors open directly into the heart of the workspace. This creates an immediate wow factor that sets the tone for everything that follows. The Recordati logo takes centre stage at this entrance, creating a strong first impression. Carpet inlays and thoughtful material choices frame this arrival sequence, with layers of visual interest that reveal themselves as visitors step into the space.

The relocated entrance opened up sight lines to the spectacular green fields beyond the windows, bringing natural beauty into the daily experience. As visitors move further in, the views unfold, connecting the interior environment with the landscape beyond.

The entrance experience is the standout feature of this project. Arriving through the glass lifts, the lighting creates drama whilst the logo and carpet work together to deliver immediate impact. The experience is layered - the initial impression as visitors enter is followed by the reveal of the views across the fields beyond. The success of the project lies in the redesign of the entrance experience, which creates a vibrant collaborative heart that brings teams together, whilst the focused areas at the far end provide everything needed for concentrated work.

The collaborative heart

From the entrance, the space opens into a vibrant, collaborative zone that naturally brings people together. This area forms the beating heart of the office, where the exposed concrete soffit reveals a warm putty colour that adds unexpected warmth throughout. We meticulously cleaned and simplified the existing services, creating refined lines that complement the architecture.

Managing the base build mechanical and electrical works allowed us to remove the suspended ceilings and reveal the architectural structure above. This contemporary ceiling treatment adds character whilst maintaining the warm, inviting atmosphere we sought to create. The spatial planning flows naturally from this central collaborative hub, with the space gradually becoming more cellular and private as you journey deeper into the office.

Throughout this entrance and collaborative area, strategic carpet zones balance the warmth of timber flooring whilst providing acoustic absorption and defining different areas. The combination of hard and soft finishes creates visual interest whilst managing the acoustics in this busy, social space.

The boardroom: an impact space

Positioned to make an impression as you move through the entrance, the boardroom serves as a sophisticated space for both internal meetings and client presentations. Large acoustic rafts float above the space, complemented by carpet inlays within the timber flooring and acoustic wall panels. This combination effectively manages sound whilst maintaining a sophisticated aesthetic.

The joinery throughout the space adds refined detail. The feature slatted wall, finished in wipeable veneer with fabric backing for acoustic performance, includes shadow gap detailing that modernises the aesthetic. This crafted element adds texture and depth whilst serving a functional purpose.

The open plan workspace

Moving deeper into the space, the open plan working areas feature flexible desk arrangements that support modern ways of working. A sustainable approach retained approximately 60% of existing assets whilst focusing investment on pieces that would define the new working culture.

The exposed ceilings maintain their presence throughout, creating visual continuity whilst the changing desk configurations signal a shift from the collaborative entrance towards more focused work settings. The historic graphics and brand values remain visible from these work areas, creating constant connection points with Recordati's story and culture.

Focus and privacy: the journey's end

At the far end of the space, enclosed focus rooms provide intimate environments for concentrated work. These spaces feature sophisticated LED office lighting that creates the right atmosphere for heads-down work, offering a marked contrast to the open, collaborative entrance.

The focus rooms are complemented by a wellbeing suite, completing the spectrum of working environments from vibrant and social at the entrance to quiet and private at the far end. This gradual transition supports different ways of working throughout the day, allowing people to choose the environment that suits their task.

A celebration of heritage throughout

With Recordati celebrating their centennial year, we saw an opportunity to weave their rich history throughout the design. The company had an archive of historic imagery spanning their 100-year journey. Working closely with the team, we created a graphics package with larger format prints featuring contextual information that connects staff across all sites and generations.

The challenge was balancing this historic narrative with their contemporary brand identity and values. We achieved this by creating an amalgamation throughout the space - historic imagery celebrating the journey, interwoven with bold Recordati branding and visual representations of their company values positioned in key sight lines from the desk areas.

A complete transformation

The transformation has delivered exactly what Recordati needed: a unified, contemporary workspace that celebrates their heritage whilst supporting modern pharmaceutical work. From the dramatic entrance experience through the glass lifts, past the collaborative heart, through the open plan working areas, to the quiet focus spaces at the far end - every element works together to create a cohesive journey through the space.

The colour palette works particularly well, with muted tones allowing the bold Recordati red to speak for itself. The amalgamation of old and new, heritage and innovation, creates a workspace that honours where Recordati has been whilst supporting where they're going. The design closely matches our original vision, creating an environment that looks exactly as we'd envisaged whilst functioning even better than anticipated. From entrance to exit, the journey through Recordati's new workspace tells their story whilst enabling their future.

The way the design celebrates our 100-year heritage whilst bringing our brand to life has been particularly meaningful for the team. It's created an environment that truly reflects who we are as Recordati, and we're seeing people genuinely excited to come into the office and work together in ways we hadn't experienced before.
